Tough day on the water with most fish caught in the slack near cover and current. This stretch of the DOJ is not a favorite by any measure, but a day on the water still beats most things. Surprised by how dingy the water was based on the river level. USGS Gauge Data:Springfield (07050700) Discharge: 67 Height: 4.20 Source: Barton |

We were on the water by 0730 and targeted structure along the edge with shaky heads and wacky rigs. We caught five smallies over 16" between the three of us, with numerous rock bass and small spotted bass in between. There are a couple slow sections of the float that require some paddling and the rock shelf about a mile in are still difficult to navigate. Fishing shut off once the fog and clouds rolled out and clear skies prevailed. Off the river by 1430... slow pace for intense fishing. 2022-08-20 | MO | James River | Rivercut | Delaware | Total trip distance: 7.5 miles7.5 | Low | Great | BLG GSF KSB LMB LSF RB SMB Barton, Adam Greenstreet, Michael On the river by 0730 with cloudy skies until 1300, then sunny and hot until we were off at 1630. Very difficult log jam and rapid to portage at the end of the golf course. The stretch from the golf course to Nelson Mill Road was very favorable for fishing, with some quality bass. The river was very low and slow, so we had to paddle for a while to reach Delaware Town. USGS Gauge Data:Boaz (07052250) Discharge: 123 Height: 2.62 Source: Barton |

2022-05-28 | MO | Swan Creek | Rt AA | Hulls Ford Road | Total trip distance: 7.4 miles7.4 | Good | Excellent | GSF KSB LMB LSF RB RSF SMB Barton, Adam Greenstreet, Michael We were on the river by 0800 and had it to ourselves for much of the day before taking out about 1530. Michael caught a 16" smallie that weighed 2lbs 8oz and I caught one that was 15.5" and the same weight. The spawn was later this year due to the cold, wet spring and flooding. Both of our larger smallies appeared to still have some eggs inside and were getting ready to spawn, which is a couple of weeks after their prime spawning period. We finessed fished, using shaky heads and Ned rigs for most of the day. Michael caught a giant green sunfish that was almost ten inches long too! There was a single deep pool that had some American lotus leafing out, so I tied on a whopper plopper and caught a 16" largemouth for my first topwater fish of the year. Later I caught a small spotted bass to complete the bass slam (largemouth, smallmouth, spotted) which I had never done before on Swan Creek. All fish were returned to the water unharmed. Overall, this section was perfect at this water level for paddling, with the Bull Creek gauge between 400-500 CFS. Swan requires an intermediate paddling skillset. Some of the shoals can be bumpy and tricky even at moderate levels so be careful and wear your PFD! No USGS gauge for this river and date Source: Barton |

2021-12-27 | MO | James River | Shelvin Rock | Hootentown | Total trip distance: 6.2 miles6.2 | Good | Poor | LMB Barton, Adam Barton, Brooke A wonderful float in late December is hard to beat. Saw bald eagles, deer, and a family of beavers swimming in the current. A gentle northeast wind made the float easy and even with heavy fishing, we made it to Hootentown in under six hours. Not a soul in sight, just the way we like it. This is the best time of the year to float on the James for sure. USGS Gauge Data:Boaz (07052250) Discharge: 220 Height: 2.90 Source: Barton |

2021-11-11 | MO | Finley River | Lindenlure | Riverside | Total trip distance: 4.6 miles4.6 | Low | Great | LMB RB SMB Barton, Adam A beautiful late autumn day full of portages around log jams and walking through the riffles. One significant portage of about 300 yards was required due to a large tree across the stream. The detour takes you away from the creek and you have to bushwack back to the gravel bar. The fishing was good though, with smallmouth feeding deep and largemouth cruising the backwater areas. USGS Gauge Data:Riverdale (07052345) Discharge: 72 Height: 1.01 Source: Barton |

The water was up and flowing a little too fast for adequate fishing conditions, but we still caught tons of rock bass and smallmouth. There were a couple of tricky portages around some trees and rapids, but overall it turned into a beautiful afternoon on the water. I would recommend the area below Brownbranch for better fishing. I caught my personal best smallmouth at just over 15" and Josh caught a 3lb spotted bass near Galena. The high temp for the day was 92 degrees, so we took plenty of time to cool off in the river when the fishing slowed down around noon. 2018-09-03 | MO | Finley River | Johns Ford Road | Reed Road | Total trip distance: 6.5 miles6.5 | Poor | Great | BLG GSF LMB LSF RB SMB Hooper, Joe Van Someren, Tom The weather was perfect, the fishing was great, but the water level was pretty lousy (despite the recent rains that occurred earlier a few days before). The CFS had unfortunately dropped below a "Good" rating. Several 12-14" large mouth bass were caught throughout the day, though. The river obstructions located at N37.045881 W93.065229 have become worse and need significant cleanup to make this area easily navigable again. Portaging around it in lower water levels has become a real hassle. The second tree snarl (coordinates N37.042722 W93.072017) now has a wide easy pathway through it. 2018-06-01 | MO | James River | Delaware | Hootentown | Total trip distance: 12.7 miles12.7 | Good | Good | CCF GSF LMB LSF SMB Van Someren, Tom Originally this trip was supposed to be on Crane Creek. However, finding it in flood stage (from the previous night's rains) when I got there, I spontaneously switched to doing the James, since it was basically on the drive back to the house. Thankfully the DOJ's current had movement for most of this long stretch, because doing 12.7 miles without its assistance would have been WAAAAY too much. Shelvin Rock to Hootie is much more interesting (IMHO) than Delaware to Shelvin. Though somewhat scenic, the entire length just has FAAAAAR too many long, slow, wide, tedious sections for my taste. The James is definitely the Waffle House of rivers (i.e., always there, always open, generally "Meh!"). USGS Gauge Data:Boaz (07052250) Discharge: 226 Height: 2.87 Source: Van Someren |

2018-05-30 | MO | Finley River | Reed Road | Reed Road | Total trip distance: 4.2 miles4.2 | Good | Excellent | BLG LMB RB SMB Van Someren, Tom A *gorgeous* day to be on a river, so I spent the entire day paddling up stream, swimming, fishing, eating, and soaking in the solitude of having this stretch of clear stream all to myself. Fished several holes and long calm sections extensively from shady areas and utterly KILLED it with the number of fish caught. At the spot where I stopped paddling up stream I spent probably 90 minutes catching something on nearly EVERY cast (it was unbelievable for a while!). Most were 6-7" goggle eye and small sun fish, but several were nice sized large and small mouth bass. Just a perfect day. Unfortunately, there is no gauge on Swan Creek, but Tom checked the level yesterday and found the recent rain had brought it up to flood stage. This stretch of the river was nearly continuously flowing so this stretch went pretty quickly. We stopped several times along the way to swim and take care of debris. Brian hit 1000 lifetime miles on this trip. Julian hit 300 and Michelle hit 250. Galen caught most of the fish (50+) while Tom and Chris each caught several. However, as expected, the flooding that resulted from all the rain created new river snarls that presented challenges to the inexperienced kayaker/canoeist. Right off the bat a poor decision to NOT take the left channel over the right managed to dump Sarah, hubby, HB and TVS trying to assist them (RRRRRR!). I lost my fishing rod, tackle, reading glasses and jerky. Fingers won't be pointed, but I knew this was the wrong choice to take. 2017-04-12 | MO | Finley River | Larose Road | Johns Ford Road | Total trip distance: 3.4 miles3.4 | Low | Good | LMB SMB Edmond, Brian Van Someren, Tom This was a very enjoyable and worthwhile trip. However, the water level was almost too low for a trouble-free float. Nearly every riffle had some dragging and most places came with some real work to keep moving forward. We had to get out a few places.Like most wild rivers, there were some downed trees that had to be portaged. A chainsaw would have been helpful for this trip and for cleaning up the river. Ironically, one downed tree and the Braden Road (2.2 miles downstream from put-in) low-water bridge could be floated under, which wouldn't have been possible with significantly more water. There were several springs and seepy bluffs along this stretch of river.
