There is a large tree that is across the river just downstream from the Dry Knob Access, which is difficult to navigate, regardless of water level. The fishing was a little slow, with my 16.5" smallie being the largest one caught that day. We had the water to ourselves all day and were off the river by 1730. 2024-06-19 | MO | Beaver Creek | Brownbranch | Bradleyville | Total trip distance: 7.9 miles7.9 | Good | Excellent | GSF KSB LMB LSF RB SMB Barton, Adam Barton, Scott On the river at 0800 and off at 1730 with sunny skies and a high of 88 degrees. The cost to put in at Brownbranch is about $10, so budget accordingly. The water level was ideal for fishing and floating. There was a slight stain to the water, which was in part to the creek still coming down from a flood the week prior. A few new trees were down in the water from the recent flood, which made a few technical spots to paddle through. Also, if the water level is any lower than this, there are many riffles that would need to be waded, with slick rocks as a hazard. The final riffle into Bradleyville is a real doozy, so be careful when making that last descent. Most fish were caught using finesse patterns, targeting structure found in the deeper and shaded areas of the creek channel. We caught mostly 10"-12" smallies with a few over 14" and lots of Ozark bass. Overall between Dad and myself, we caught over 100 fish on the day. One of the best fishing floats in Ozarks. A full day on the river, with the smallies holding tight to structure in moderate current, chasing a craw pattern. Fishing was tough on the backside of a storm system, but we managed to pull a few quality fish out. This stretch has numerous long, stagnant pools, so I would not recommend this float unless their is more water. No USGS gauge for this river and date Source: Barton |

We were on by 1345 and the fishing was great for the first couple hours until the rain rolled in. Caught lots of smallies and rock bass on finesse techniques and even caught some on topwater later in the evening. Off by 1930. 2022-10-29 | MO | Finley River | Lindenlure | Riverside | Total trip distance: 4.6 miles4.6 | Low | Fair | RB SMB Barton, Adam Greenstreet, Michael A beautiful fall day to spend on the river. Weather was cloudy with little to no wind and a high temperature of around 60 degrees. Fishing was slow and the river was ultra clear with a layer of leaves on the bottom making finesse patterns difficult to deploy. Nevertheless, we had a great time and saw numerous wildlife, including bald eagles, turkey, and deer. We saw one 10-point buck bedded down below Green Bridge and spooked him as we floated by. 2022-09-10 | MO | Osage Fork | Dryknob | Davis Ford | Total trip distance: 4.9 miles4.9 | Low | Good | GSF RB RSF SMB Barton, Adam Greenstreet, Michael On the water by 0700 and the river was low. We had moderate success fishing, but the full moon the night before may have allowed the fish to eat all night causing them to be pretty finicky for us. There are several lengthy portages due to downed trees across the river. One tricky spot in the river caused my kayak to shift course and my rods were snapped on a rootwad in the middle of a riffle. Overall, a fun float on a new river, but needs more water to be excellent. No USGS gauge for this river and date Source: Barton |

We were on the water by 0730 and targeted structure along the edge with shaky heads and wacky rigs. We caught five smallies over 16" between the three of us, with numerous rock bass and small spotted bass in between. There are a couple slow sections of the float that require some paddling and the rock shelf about a mile in are still difficult to navigate. Fishing shut off once the fog and clouds rolled out and clear skies prevailed. Off the river by 1430... slow pace for intense fishing. 2022-08-20 | MO | James River | Rivercut | Delaware | Total trip distance: 7.5 miles7.5 | Low | Great | BLG GSF KSB LMB LSF RB SMB Barton, Adam Greenstreet, Michael On the river by 0730 with cloudy skies until 1300, then sunny and hot until we were off at 1630. Very difficult log jam and rapid to portage at the end of the golf course. The stretch from the golf course to Nelson Mill Road was very favorable for fishing, with some quality bass. The river was very low and slow, so we had to paddle for a while to reach Delaware Town. USGS Gauge Data:Boaz (07052250) Discharge: 123 Height: 2.62 Source: Barton |

2022-05-28 | MO | Swan Creek | Rt AA | Hulls Ford Road | Total trip distance: 7.4 miles7.4 | Good | Excellent | GSF KSB LMB LSF RB RSF SMB Barton, Adam Greenstreet, Michael We were on the river by 0800 and had it to ourselves for much of the day before taking out about 1530. Michael caught a 16" smallie that weighed 2lbs 8oz and I caught one that was 15.5" and the same weight. The spawn was later this year due to the cold, wet spring and flooding. Both of our larger smallies appeared to still have some eggs inside and were getting ready to spawn, which is a couple of weeks after their prime spawning period. We finessed fished, using shaky heads and Ned rigs for most of the day. Michael caught a giant green sunfish that was almost ten inches long too! There was a single deep pool that had some American lotus leafing out, so I tied on a whopper plopper and caught a 16" largemouth for my first topwater fish of the year. Later I caught a small spotted bass to complete the bass slam (largemouth, smallmouth, spotted) which I had never done before on Swan Creek. All fish were returned to the water unharmed. Overall, this section was perfect at this water level for paddling, with the Bull Creek gauge between 400-500 CFS. Swan requires an intermediate paddling skillset. Some of the shoals can be bumpy and tricky even at moderate levels so be careful and wear your PFD! No USGS gauge for this river and date Source: Barton |

2022-04-23 | MO | Gasconade River | Buzzard Bluff | Wilbur Allen | Total trip distance: 7.2 miles7.2 | High | Fair | GSF LSF RB Barton, Adam Barton, Scott Windy conditions (gusts over 40 mph) and the river being high made fishing conditions tough all day long. The hardest part was trying to keep the kayaks in place to make the proper casts. All the fish caught were in areas out of the wind and in slow current. Our target was smallmouth, but maybe the spawn is going on right now. Water temp was 64 degrees. There are a few tricky riffles through this section at this water level. A tree had recently fallen across near the take out and resulted in a minor portage. Most notably though, we saw hundreds of turtles along the way. One softshell turtle I saw had to be about the size of a manhole cover! Two bald eagles nest were spotted in large sycamores closed to Manes and we could see the males searching for additional food overhead. 2021-11-11 | MO | Finley River | Lindenlure | Riverside | Total trip distance: 4.6 miles4.6 | Low | Great | LMB RB SMB Barton, Adam A beautiful late autumn day full of portages around log jams and walking through the riffles. One significant portage of about 300 yards was required due to a large tree across the stream. The detour takes you away from the creek and you have to bushwack back to the gravel bar. The fishing was good though, with smallmouth feeding deep and largemouth cruising the backwater areas. USGS Gauge Data:Riverdale (07052345) Discharge: 72 Height: 1.01 Source: Barton |

The water was up and flowing a little too fast for adequate fishing conditions, but we still caught tons of rock bass and smallmouth. There were a couple of tricky portages around some trees and rapids, but overall it turned into a beautiful afternoon on the water. I would recommend the area below Brownbranch for better fishing. We didn't get an early start since we only had a few miles to go. This day was marked by two significant snake sightings. The first was a erythristic common watersnake, which was neat enough. When I posted this on Facebook later, someone else posted the same colored snake from a different observer. It turns out it was the exact same snake, verified because it was basking on the exact same log. Less than a mile away, Stephanie and I were looking at some flowering shrubs halfway up a bluff. We paddled over to get a better look, not paying attention to the rocks below. Without realizing it, I had paddled Stephanie to within a foot of a basking cottonmouth. Had it been inclined, it could have tagged her hand, which was resting on the side of the canoe. Luckily, it was merely annoyed at our presence. The water flow was fine through this section but the river widened and flattened quite a bit as well. We agreed that the section below Bay Creek just wasn't as scenic and desirable as the upper sections of the river. USGS Gauge Data:Alley Spring (07065495) Discharge: 421 Height: 3.38 Source: Edmond |

2020-06-03 | MO | Jacks Fork River | VFW Campground (A) | Lost Hollow (B) | Total trip distance: 32.5 miles11.2 | Good | Poor | RB SMB Bartlett, Stephanie Edmond, Brian Van Someren, Tom The water level was somewhat better. On this stretch and the others, I jumped out several times to save our loaded canoe from certain danger. This is my favorite section of the river. The scenery is fantastic and the river is still small enough to feel like you're enclosed. A few miles before we hit Jam Up Cave, a thunderstorm blew up and rained hard. Tom got a great video of the beginning of this storm. We sought shelter and dried off somewhat in the cave itself. While there, we saw a large group camping on the gravel bar across from the cave. They had several tents and lots of gear. We're calling this the Ron White Expedition. Although there is evidence that Ron White was, in fact, performing this week and not floating and fishing on the Jacks Fork River, we think there was probably a double standing in for him during the shows so the real Ron White could get away. Tom asked if he knew Jeff Foxworthy and he said he did. Who are you going to believe? A published show schedule or a man's self-professed friendship with a famous comedian? 2020-05-02 | MO | Finley River | Johns Ford Road | Reed Road | Total trip distance: 6.5 miles6.5 | Good | Poor | RB SMB Bartlett, Renee Jones, Marianne Van Someren, Andrea Van Someren, Tom An absolutely perfect day, with excellent water flow and stream clarity the whole way. Got in at 11:40 and took out at 18:30, stopping for two lazy lunches on shady gravel bars. The nasty snarl just below Jackson Spring needs more work done on it, due to a large tree completely crossing the river obstructing the navigable path. The Pedelo Creek snarl area has another minor tree obstruction that a chainsaw would make quick work of. Note: Ed Underwood, the property owner at the Reed Road take-out spot, has gated his entrance to the river. He hasn't begun locking the gate yet, only utilizing a loose chain looped into a slot on the movable gate. Speaking with another person who also parked on the property, he said Ed put the gate up since the Linden property owners had closed that access to the public. He said Ed would continue allowing access to the river so long as it didn't get crazy or out of hand. I think it's only a matter of time, though, before idiots will ruin Reed Road as a usable access to the Finley. USGS Gauge Data:Riverdale (07052345) Discharge: 573 Height: 2.46 Source: Van Someren |

One down side is having to portage kayaks over the dam at Linden (as all the property above the dam is private homes). Found a spot to park the car well off the road that wasn't marked Private Property / No Trespassing and paddled upstream 1.28 miles. This section of the river isn't as favorable to paddle upstream as it has WAAAAY too many extended gravely bars the kayak has to be pulled through (so it's more like a hike with your boat). Fished several holes and long calm sections extensively from shady areas and utterly KILLED it with the number of fish caught. At the spot where I stopped paddling up stream I spent probably 90 minutes catching something on nearly EVERY cast (it was unbelievable for a while!). Most were 6-7" goggle eye and small sun fish, but several were nice sized large and small mouth bass. Just a perfect day. Unfortunately, there is no gauge on Swan Creek, but Tom checked the level yesterday and found the recent rain had brought it up to flood stage. This stretch of the river was nearly continuously flowing so this stretch went pretty quickly. We stopped several times along the way to swim and take care of debris. Brian hit 1000 lifetime miles on this trip. Julian hit 300 and Michelle hit 250. Galen caught most of the fish (50+) while Tom and Chris each caught several. There are a couple spots in this stretch that would benefit from a small chain saw being brought along on the next trip. The water level was good for this sort of up-stream trip: not overly swift, but high enough to make the downstream trip easy without dragging.
