This was an impromptu trip planned to take advantage of the warm weather. We had originally talked about going to the Jacks Fork, which was unseasonably suitable for a trip, but the girls wanted to go and didn't want to go that far. The river wasn't too busy at first but became a zoo later in the afternoon. Water levels were very good with bumps in only a few spots and portages only necessary when a riffle was misread. We stopped for a long lunch at the confluence of the Finely River. Lunch was sushi, rivercado, cheese curds, deer sausage, chips, peanuts, mangos, with cheesecake for dessert. We got on the river around 1130 and pulled out around 1700.This was an impromptu trip planned to take advantage of the warm weather. This trip was a celebration of the legal victory that kept the Canyon Road access at Linden on the Finley River open to the public. The water was on the "good" end of "low" (or the "low" end of "good"). Several of the riffles were draggy, some portages were required, and the current was very slow. Tom and I discussed this and rated it as a "low" for these purposes. Since we started around 1430 hours (and off around 1900 hours), there was no organized lunch. Everyone shared some food, however, The weather didn't turn out as hot as predicted and the water itself was cool and refreshing. This trip was a celebration of the legal victory that kept the Canyon Road access at Linden on the Finley River open to the public. We decided to put in above Rt O and found a fantastic place with easy access and plenty of parking. At this water level, it took only 30 minutes to get to Rt O. We dubbed this stretch "Seven Bridges (River) Road" as you encounter seven bridges on this stretch if you count the access points (all of which we paddled under except the first one). This is a "wild" river with no regular maintenance and we saw nobody else on the river with boats, our only human contact being a few tractors, some farmers cleaning up flood damage from last week and, of course, cars traversing some of the seven bridges. There are several whitewater-y drops on this stretch but the most exciting are below Flint Hill Branch, FR 44, and Rt BB. This is probably close to the minimum water level it would take to fully enjoy these as we bumped the bottom in a few places. The water was clear despite the recent flooding. This stretch was pretty technical with several tricky runs and some places where we had to navigate downed trees. Still, we had to get out of our kayaks in only two places, once because of a downed tree we had to scramble over and again at a tricky bend that would have dumped us both. Julian did a fantastic job of navigating several tricky spots with very little guidance. During this trip, we saw two White-tailed Deer, a half dozen Bald Eagles (or the same one staying just ahead of us), at least two pair of Wood Ducks, and countless Great Blue Herons. Turtles, frogs, and snakes were scarce but we saw a few. The find of the trip was four bovine skulls lashed together with a rope. We brought them home, of course, as one does. We started at 1000 hours and finished at 1600 hours with two stops, maybe 15 minutes each. Except for three long, slow pools, the water was moving for most of this stretch. Julian hit 500 river miles on this trip!We decided to put in above Rt O and found a fantastic place with easy access and plenty of parking. This was our first whitewater rafting trip. It was exciting and would have been difficult, perhaps even dangerous, to do without an experienced guide. Emily and Daniel did an amazing job. Emily was training Daniel (her son) and knew every riffle and rock in the channel and knew exactly where to send us. We paddled on their command, leaned in, locked in, and rested during still waters. This was a fantastic trip that we all enjoyed. We got on the river about 1100 hours and were finished by about 1215 hours. This was our first whitewater rafting trip. The water level on this day was perfect with nearly constant flowing water, several haystack riffles, and perfect clarity. There were several difficult areas that turned out to be fairly technical. I was informed that this was not an easy river (like the others) and it wasn't as much fun as a "leisurely" float. We stopped and had two lunches, including chips, cookies, deer sausage, cheese sticks, potato salad, and, of course, rivercado. The obligatory selfie suffered from poor lighting, inadequate equipment, and uncooperative subjects. The water level on this day was perfect with nearly constant flowing water, several haystack riffles, and perfect clarity. Although the water was a bit cloudy, the level and riffles were perfect with several of them rising into perfect haystacks. This was not technically challenging at all but it could be intimidating for someone who wasn't ready for it. Ponca was really chaotic and busy but we didn't encounter a lot of people on the trip, most of those being the same groups we kept leapfrogging. We found two waterfall creeks besides Hemmed In Hollow (in photos). This was a very long day. I returned home via Arkansas backroad highways leading up to Shell Knob via MO 39.Although the water was a bit cloudy, the level and riffles were perfect with several of them rising into perfect haystacks. This was a last-minute trip to catch the last of the water from the storms earlier in the week. The water level was perfect, with almost no dragging and just one portage through a downed tree. The water clarity was as good as we've seen and the current was swift in many places. Lunch was mango and avocado salsa, BLTs with Pike County homegrown tomatoes, and pasta salad. Chips and cookies were around for later snacks, too. Although many vehicles were parked at the put-in and takeout but not many were actually on the river that we saw. We started at 1120 hours and stopped at 1740 hours with several stops, at least two close to an hour or more. This was a last-minute trip to catch the last of the water from the storms earlier in the week. At least one raccoon (and I heard it fighting with something, probably another raccoon) found its way to our campsite last night. I got up and caught it red-handed trying to get into the stove (the only thing I couldn't lock away). I moved the stove to the canoe, thinking it would be more secure there. I then heard it rattling around in the canoe and was up half the night worried that it would knock the boat off the sandbar and we'd have no way to get all of us and our gear downriver. That didn't happen, of course. The next morning, I woke up early and spent quite a bit of time just sitting by the river while the boys slept in. Breakfast was sausage / egg / cheese muffins, toast and homemade jelly, and fruit. We pushed off right at 1000 hours and pulled out around 1300 hours. At least one raccoon (and I heard it fighting with something, probably another raccoon) found its way to our campsite last night. We left the house at 730 hours with a threat of rain but none materialized. I was worried about how the car would perform with a loaded trailer and four people. It seemed to do okay but hard telling what kind of wear and tear I put on it. At one point, halfway there, the car stopped responding to the gas pedal. I thought it was done because of the load. Turns out Joseph had fallen asleep and his knee pushed the shift into neutral. I fixed that and we were on our way again. We paid Jadwin ($95) to shuttle the car and trailer and managed to be on the river right at 1100 hours. At first, we were pretty casual but once we saw how many people were on the river, we realized we needed to get ahead of them to properly enjoy Cave Spring. We got in front of most people and were able to check it out. We stopped at Pulltite to get chips and water for Julian. After that, we stopped at the spring and then pushed on towards our campsite, which was the little sandbar near Mill Hollow that we stayed at last year. We arrived at 1730 hours, setup, and made a dinner of grilled burgers, mac and cheese, and honey glazed carrots, with peanut butter with chocolate chunk cookies for dessert. It would be really difficult to do this stretch successfully without a lot of paddling (which we did) or arriving near dark.We left the house at 730 hours with a threat of rain but none materialized. We woke up to a chilly morning but little dew and no boats floating by. Although the night felt restless for both of us, we felt awake and ready to go. Eventually, people started floating by but not nearly as many as yesterday. We packed up camp and got going on the river about 1000 hours. Lots of wildlife was out today since the river wasn't as crowded. We spent most of the morning with the river completely to ourselves. We stopped at the cave below the state park and found a grotto salamander in the spring at the cave entrance. We arrived at our destination about 1300 hours, packed up, and stopped in Eminence for a late lunch. This was a successful trip. Two places nearly dumped the canoe but we managed to stop it in time.We woke up to a chilly morning but little dew and no boats floating by. We started this trip about 1100 hours at Akers. We stopped at Jadwin Canoe Rental to make arrangements to move our rig from Akers to Round Spring and then started on our way with a fully loaded canoe. The day was immediately eventful as we witnessed a car that was drowned in the crossing at Akers followed up by a pickup that made the crossing. We mostly paddled all day, stopping a few times for snacks and breaks. Many people were out on the river but it wasn't crowded by any means. We stopped at the Pulltite store for a few things and then checked out the spring and cabin. We stopped at a small patch of sand in a wooded area to spend the night. The day was long and we were both tired and ready to rest. Dinner was grilled burgers, foil carrots, and mango / avocado salsa. It was a beautiful evening and we spent much of it sitting at the river's edge and watching the water roll by. We showered and went to bed only to discover the tent was at the end of its life and one of our air mattresses wouldn't hold air. This was my first overnight trip with a single companion (that wasn't one of my kids) and Beth's first overnight trip on the river. We started this trip about 1100 hours at Akers. This was a birthday trip for Brian but the river was as crowded as we've ever seen it, a real "Schmuck-A-Rama" as it were. Still, the water level was good, the water was pretty clear, and we had a good time. We pulled up to a gravel bar just below the confluence with the Finely to cook burgers, share lunch, swim, and talk. Although it wasn't ideal circumstances for us, it was great to get out again. We packed up camp and left the gravel bar shortly before 1000 hours after a breakfast of sausage / egg / cheese English muffin sandwiches and chocolate chip muffins. We were running low on water so I thawed the frozen water bottles I had in the cooler. It worked fine since we had eaten most of the food that needed refrigeration and the freezer packs were holding out. The river water had cleared considerably but was still flowing well. Because the river ended up in several braided channels, we did have some difficulty with dragging at riffles in a few places. There were also some dangerous areas, including a riffle that would have been impossible to navigate successfully in even a kayak. We avoided these and nobody tipped over although I scraped past a root wad and ended up with a minor contusion on the top of my head and lost my paddle in the process. Luckily, Alex retrieved it for me. We stopped in a few places to get out and explore and swim. We were at the takeout by 1300 hours. Since everyone had to fit in the car, we packed the gear in an upright canoe and repacked at the put-in to have a good trip home. This was an overnight trip with just the four of us. Water levels looked good for Beaver Creek and it was close so we decided to give it a try (the Northfork, our original destination, was flooding with the recent rain events). I was surprised to see the water murky, almost muddy. The shuttle to Long Creek Road was more than an hour as it was not direct. We stopped for an extended period at Brushy Creek which was a cool, clear stream that mixed with the muddy waters of Beaver Creek. We ate lunch and made our way to the camp site just above Hoot Owl Hollow. Dinner was burgers, mac and cheese, broccoli / sugar snap peas / mushrooms, and s'mores for dessert. Although the night was clear and fairly warm, we were tired and didn't stay up late. The water level on this day was not that high despite the murkiness of the water. It didn't warrant a "High" rating although it was really running down at Long Creek. I think we managed to get on the river as it was dropping rapidly (see the difference in water level between the two days). This was our last day on the river. After leaving our perfect camp site, we took our time getting to the takeout spot. Nobody wanted to leave. Shortly after passing by the state park, we discovered a cave (Merritt Rock Cave) that was spectacularly scenic and wound its way a long distance into the mountain. Bring extra flashlights! We observed and photographed a Long-tailed Salamander (Eurycea longicauda) and a Cave Salamander (Eurycea lucifuga). Tom followed the passage all the way to the end where there was a deep pool and a closed (to humans) passageway further back. After visiting Cave Spring again, we pushed downriver. Although we had dry ice to keep coolers cold, we were running low and stopped at Pulltite for more beer and ice (and ice cream bars!). We also stopped at several of the interesting springs near Pulltite Spring, including the main spring and cabin. The sandbar we found near Mill Hollow was perfect although small. Dinner was Brunswick stew, foil-steamed Brussels sprouts and mushrooms, and jalapeno cornbread. Breakfast the next morning was sausage / egg / cheese sandwiches on English muffins. Tom caught the one and only fish on this entire trip on this stretch. After visiting Cave Spring again, we pushed downriver. We stopped around 1200 hours at the gravel bar across from Cave Spring to setup camp and spend the day. We had an interesting experience all afternoon and watched several groups pass us by and visit the cave. I was surprised at the number of people who passed by on a week day. As our shade disappeared, Tom built an epic tarp shelter. In our clumsy attempts to construct the shelter, a passerby declared it the ugliest flag he had ever seen. In the evening, we took a trip over to the cave and spring for photographs. Another group hiked down the mountain to camp at the spring with their gear in tow. They were pretty rowdy at first but calmed down significantly before we went to bed. The shower was hot tonight. Dinner was Tom's sweet and sour chicken and rice, foil-steamed broccoli, sugar snap peas, and mushrooms, and jalapeno cornbread. After shuttling, we started downriver around 1430 hours. Before Welch Spring, we hit a few shallow riffles but the water level was pretty good ("lower side of a 'Good' rating"). We stopped at Medlock Spring and found Lonnie sleeping in his boat. He slept right through several of us landing to check out the spring and cave and eventually gave us some free canned alcoholic drinks. We saw one family along the way who were visiting relatives in Salem on an annual trip. Dinner tonight was grilled burgers (without the moldy buns), macaroni and cheese, and grilled corn on the cob. We also had some mango and avocado salsa. Tom slept in a tent, Jason and Brian on sleeping pads under the stars. Overall, the water level was good, the weather was perfect, and the first part of this trip was a success. This was Jason's first time in a kayak and the first time in the ONSR. We got on the river around 1000 hours and paddled pretty consistently to secure a gravel bar with shade about 2/3 of the way to our destination. We cooked burgers, ate pasta salad, chips, and cookies, and swam and skipped rocks for much of the afternoon. Around 1400 hours, we pushed off to finish the journey but stopped a few times to swim and relax. The water level was a little low in spots but still warrants a "Good" rating. Several others were on the river due to the hot weather. Andrea wanted to get on the river for the afternoon and this was our best option to avoid the crowds. Maybe 1/3 to a 1/4 of this stretch had to be hiked upstream with our kayaks in tow. It wasn't too bad but more than some expected. Once we got to the gravel bar, the day was excellent. Unfortunately, the swimming hole at this bend is starting to fill in with gravel. It's like to be full in a year or two or maybe after the next big flood. We had rivercado, guacamole, deer sausage, cheese, crackers, grapes, various chips, Cynthia's homemade cookies, beer, and whiskey shots.Andrea wanted to get on the river for the afternoon and this was our best option to avoid the crowds. We started downstream around 1130 hours. The stretch from Long Hollow to Greer Spring was slow but not low. We were able to get through each riffle without getting out although there was some dragging. Past Greer Spring, the water was swifter with less dragging. We originally planned to start at MO 19 but decided we wanted to see the confluence of the spring and the river. Because of that, our late start, and the long shuttle, we had more river miles to cover on the first day than we had planned. We were also in competition with other groups for the sparse camp sites. We finally found one around 1800 hours that was small but suited us fairly well.We started downstream around 1130 hours. The stretch from Long Hollow to Greer Spring was slow but not low. Because of that, our late start, and the long shuttle, we had more river miles to cover on the first day than we had planned. We were also in competition with other groups for the sparse camp sites. We finally found one around 1800 hours that was small but suited us fairly well. USGS Gauge Data:

This was a lazy summer trip with low (but acceptable) water levels. The water was clear and flowing slowly with only a few faster riffles. We spent most of the day on a gravel bar about 3/4 of the way through, cooking burgers for lunch and swimming and snorkeling. Julian paddled his own boat and spent his time back and forth between our different boats. He also swam a lot with his boat in tow. This was a lazy summer trip with low (but acceptable) water levels. This section of the river is very challenging for the first mile, where the stream is braided and filled with log jams. We had a long portage through a pasture at the very beginning and a few places where we had to get out of our boats and make our way across logs. There were also several downed trees where short portages or tricky and creative maneuvers were required to push through. After the first mile, the river opened up and was fine most of the way. This section of the river is very challenging for the first mile, where the stream is braided and filled with log jams. We had more rain this morning but it wasn't the deluge we'd had before. We didn't get an early start since we only had a few miles to go. This day was marked by two significant snake sightings. The first was a erythristic common watersnake, which was neat enough. When I posted this on Facebook later, someone else posted the same colored snake from a different observer. It turns out it was the exact same snake, verified because it was basking on the exact same log. Less than a mile away, Stephanie and I were looking at some flowering shrubs halfway up a bluff. We paddled over to get a better look, not paying attention to the rocks below. Without realizing it, I had paddled Stephanie to within a foot of a basking cottonmouth. Had it been inclined, it could have tagged her hand, which was resting on the side of the canoe. Luckily, it was merely annoyed at our presence. The water flow was fine through this section but the river widened and flattened quite a bit as well. We agreed that the section below Bay Creek just wasn't as scenic and desirable as the upper sections of the river. We had more rain this morning but it wasn't the deluge we'd had before. This day started out with an early morning thunderstorm that finished raining around 0900 hours. We got a late and wet start but managed to push off the gravel bar by 1100 hours. The water flow was very good through this stretch at this level although there were still a few places where we dragged. We ran into Ron White's group at Chalk Bluff today and got further confirmation of a positive identification. We commented on their massive amount of gear and Ron stated that the circus had come to town. He didn't have a drink and cigar but he was headed to a cooler to get one. The water level was somewhat better. On this stretch and the others, I jumped out several times to save our loaded canoe from certain danger. This is my favorite section of the river. The scenery is fantastic and the river is still small enough to feel like you're enclosed. A few miles before we hit Jam Up Cave, a thunderstorm blew up and rained hard. Tom got a great video of the beginning of this storm. We sought shelter and dried off somewhat in the cave itself. While there, we saw a large group camping on the gravel bar across from the cave. They had several tents and lots of gear. We're calling this the Ron White Expedition. Although there is evidence that Ron White was, in fact, performing this week and not floating and fishing on the Jacks Fork River, we think there was probably a double standing in for him during the shows so the real Ron White could get away. Tom asked if he knew Jeff Foxworthy and he said he did. Who are you going to believe? A published show schedule or a man's self-professed friendship with a famous comedian? The water level on this stretch was just barely good enough for a "Good" rating. I wouldn't want to float it any lower. This section of the river wasn't particularly scenic (compared to further downstream). Our time on the river this day was basically a gorgeous evening float. There were several good camping sites before we settled on the gravel bar we finally chose. We also met a fellow wilderness paddler, Earl Lipscomb, who hailed from Carthage but was a Glendale alum just a few years older than Tom. They compared notes and acquaintances. Earl tries to float the Jacks Fork at least once per year and has very detailed notes about camp sites and fishing holes for this river and others. This was a great half-day float (we started at 1300 hours) and spent the whole afternoon on the river. We collected a couple of feed sacks full of Scouring Rush to plant along the creek banks at my house. The place we took the boats out was along FR 105 at the rip-rap and it was a hassle. I didn't check out the little spit of land just beyond here that has road access. I don't recall a place where you can haul out boats but it deserves further inspection. This was a great half-day float (we started at 1300 hours) and spent the whole afternoon on the river. This was a technical section of Flat Creek, much more so than we expected. Several downed trees and some tricky log and brush traps were present, some of which took down some boats. The water level was very good with just a few places being too shallow to float successfully (and most of those were because of the aforementioned obstacles forcing us to choose less than optimal pathways for the water level). This was Kathy's first river trip (although she'd been in a kayak before) and Julian's third solo kayak trip. Both performed admirably despite the technical difficulties. This was a technical section of Flat Creek, much more so than we expected. USGS Gauge Data:

We broke camp late and spent a great deal of time lounging on gravel bars, including a delightful tea time setup at the mouth of Sinking Creek. Here, water in the creek was warmer than the river water which was an interesting flip about the usual nature of things. This was a very enjoyable and worthwhile trip. However, the water level was almost too low for a trouble-free float. Nearly every riffle had some dragging and most places came with some real work to keep moving forward. We had to get out a few places.Like most wild rivers, there were some downed trees that had to be portaged. A chainsaw would have been helpful for this trip and for cleaning up the river. Ironically, one downed tree and the Braden Road (2.2 miles downstream from put-in) low-water bridge could be floated under, which wouldn't have been possible with significantly more water. There were several springs and seepy bluffs along this stretch of river. This was a very enjoyable and worthwhile trip. The water level was about right for this stretch. More water would have reduced dragging on some riffles, but it would also have made the obstacles and portage areas much more dangerous. The gauge information is misleading here. The standard is to choose the value at noon on the day of the trip, but it's clear from our observations that we were riding the flood crest at least part of the day (and the Windyville gauge is quite a ways upstream from this stretch of river). When we reached Lead Mines, the gravel bar where we left the truck was flooded and nearly stranded us until the water receded. Originally, we planned to put in at Prosperine but decided we could float the stretch between Barclay and Prosperine faster than doing the long shuttle to the other side of the river. I'm not sure that was actually true but it certainly wasn't a huge difference in time. The gauge information is misleading here. The water level was at the very cusp of being too low to float. This stretch was very technical, with several downed trees, narrow water, and difficult places to maneuver, even with a kayak. It is not recommended for a canoe or for inexperienced paddlers without the expectation of a lot of portages and upsets. Almost everyone was able to get through all the riffles without getting out of their boats, but several places were too shallow to float without dragging at least some. A lot of debris was in the river from recent floods. Camped on Rymer gravel bar the night before. First part of trip was uneventful. Right after Blue Spring, a thunderstorm with lots of lightning and thunder dumped nearly two inches of rain on us. Classic Trip List

The classic River Trips application is still available for use. It is updated with the new system using a data retrofit. It is no longer maintained. The original River Trips application is no longer updated (as of 1 Dec 2016) but can be checked for errors or for the condition of the data before it was converted to the new system.
