None Blaisdell, Beth Edmond, Brian Edmond, Julian Jones, Kristen Shelley, Amy Van Someren, Tom This was an impromptu trip planned to take advantage of the warm weather. We had originally talked about going to the Jacks Fork, which was unseasonably suitable for a trip, but the girls wanted to go and didn't want to go that far. The river wasn't too busy at first but became a zoo later in the afternoon. Water levels were very good with bumps in only a few spots and portages only necessary when a riffle was misread. We stopped for a long lunch at the confluence of the Finely River. Lunch was sushi, rivercado, cheese curds, deer sausage, chips, peanuts, mangos, with cheesecake for dessert. We got on the river around 1130 and pulled out around 1700. USGS Gauge Data:Boaz (07052250) Discharge: 215 Height: 2.87 Source: Edmond |

Edmond, Brian Edmond, Julian Evans, Adam Mohr, Kelly Romano, Ben Romano, David Romano, Hannah Romano, Lucy Sherman, Bev Sherman, Paul Van Someren, Tom This trip was a celebration of the legal victory that kept the Canyon Road access at Linden on the Finley River open to the public. The water was on the "good" end of "low" (or the "low" end of "good"). Several of the riffles were draggy, some portages were required, and the current was very slow. Tom and I discussed this and rated it as a "low" for these purposes. Since we started around 1430 hours (and off around 1900 hours), there was no organized lunch. Everyone shared some food, however, The weather didn't turn out as hot as predicted and the water itself was cool and refreshing. None Edmond, Brian Edmond, Julian We decided to put in above Rt O and found a fantastic place with easy access and plenty of parking. At this water level, it took only 30 minutes to get to Rt O. We dubbed this stretch "Seven Bridges (River) Road" as you encounter seven bridges on this stretch if you count the access points (all of which we paddled under except the first one). This is a "wild" river with no regular maintenance and we saw nobody else on the river with boats, our only human contact being a few tractors, some farmers cleaning up flood damage from last week and, of course, cars traversing some of the seven bridges. There are several whitewater-y drops on this stretch but the most exciting are below Flint Hill Branch, FR 44, and Rt BB. This is probably close to the minimum water level it would take to fully enjoy these as we bumped the bottom in a few places. The water was clear despite the recent flooding. This stretch was pretty technical with several tricky runs and some places where we had to navigate downed trees. Still, we had to get out of our kayaks in only two places, once because of a downed tree we had to scramble over and again at a tricky bend that would have dumped us both. Julian did a fantastic job of navigating several tricky spots with very little guidance. During this trip, we saw two White-tailed Deer, a half dozen Bald Eagles (or the same one staying just ahead of us), at least two pair of Wood Ducks, and countless Great Blue Herons. Turtles, frogs, and snakes were scarce but we saw a few. The find of the trip was four bovine skulls lashed together with a rope. We brought them home, of course, as one does. We started at 1000 hours and finished at 1600 hours with two stops, maybe 15 minutes each. Except for three long, slow pools, the water was moving for most of this stretch. It was exciting and would have been difficult, perhaps even dangerous, to do without an experienced guide. Emily and Daniel did an amazing job. I got up and caught it red-handed trying to get into the stove (the only thing I couldn't lock away). I moved the stove to the canoe, thinking it would be more secure there. I then heard it rattling around in the canoe and was up half the night worried that it would knock the boat off the sandbar and we'd have no way to get all of us and our gear downriver. That didn't happen, of course. The next morning, I woke up early and spent quite a bit of time just sitting by the river while the boys slept in. Breakfast was sausage / egg / cheese muffins, toast and homemade jelly, and fruit. We pushed off right at 1000 hours and pulled out around 1300 hours. I was worried about how the car would perform with a loaded trailer and four people. It seemed to do okay but hard telling what kind of wear and tear I put on it. At one point, halfway there, the car stopped responding to the gas pedal. I thought it was done because of the load. Turns out Joseph had fallen asleep and his knee pushed the shift into neutral. I fixed that and we were on our way again. We paid Jadwin ($95) to shuttle the car and trailer and managed to be on the river right at 1100 hours. At first, we were pretty casual but once we saw how many people were on the river, we realized we needed to get ahead of them to properly enjoy Cave Spring. We got in front of most people and were able to check it out. We stopped at Pulltite to get chips and water for Julian. After that, we stopped at the spring and then pushed on towards our campsite, which was the little sandbar near Mill Hollow that we stayed at last year. We arrived at 1730 hours, setup, and made a dinner of grilled burgers, mac and cheese, and honey glazed carrots, with peanut butter with chocolate chunk cookies for dessert. Eventually, people started floating by but not nearly as many as yesterday. We packed up camp and got going on the river about 1000 hours. Lots of wildlife was out today since the river wasn't as crowded. We spent most of the morning with the river completely to ourselves. We stopped at the cave below the state park and found a grotto salamander in the spring at the cave entrance. We stopped at Jadwin Canoe Rental to make arrangements to move our rig from Akers to Round Spring and then started on our way with a fully loaded canoe. The day was immediately eventful as we witnessed a car that was drowned in the crossing at Akers followed up by a pickup that made the crossing. We mostly paddled all day, stopping a few times for snacks and breaks. Many people were out on the river but it wasn't crowded by any means. We stopped at the Pulltite store for a few things and then checked out the spring and cabin. We stopped at a small patch of sand in a wooded area to spend the night. The day was long and we were both tired and ready to rest. Dinner was grilled burgers, foil carrots, and mango / avocado salsa. It was a beautiful evening and we spent much of it sitting at the river's edge and watching the water roll by. We showered and went to bed only to discover the tent was at the end of its life and one of our air mattresses wouldn't hold air. We were running low on water so I thawed the frozen water bottles I had in the cooler. It worked fine since we had eaten most of the food that needed refrigeration and the freezer packs were holding out. The river water had cleared considerably but was still flowing well. Because the river ended up in several braided channels, we did have some difficulty with dragging at riffles in a few places. There were also some dangerous areas, including a riffle that would have been impossible to navigate successfully in even a kayak. We avoided these and nobody tipped over although I scraped past a root wad and ended up with a minor contusion on the top of my head and lost my paddle in the process. Luckily, Alex retrieved it for me. We stopped in a few places to get out and explore and swim. We were at the takeout by 1300 hours. Water levels looked good for Beaver Creek and it was close so we decided to give it a try (the Northfork, our original destination, was flooding with the recent rain events). I was surprised to see the water murky, almost muddy. The shuttle to Long Creek Road was more than an hour as it was not direct. We stopped for an extended period at Brushy Creek which was a cool, clear stream that mixed with the muddy waters of Beaver Creek. We ate lunch and made our way to the camp site just above Hoot Owl Hollow. Dinner was burgers, mac and cheese, broccoli / sugar snap peas / mushrooms, and s'mores for dessert. Although the night was clear and fairly warm, we were tired and didn't stay up late. The water level on this day was not that high despite the murkiness of the water. It didn't warrant a "High" rating although it was really running down at Long Creek. I think we managed to get on the river as it was dropping rapidly (see the difference in water level between the two days). Alex and I ran the shuttle, Joseph and Julian stayed behind. At some point, Day picked up a Mexican Tree Frog in his boot and it made its way up his pant leg until he discovered it there. The northern part of this lagoon was typified by low-growing branches and vines that we needed to bushwhack through while in the canoe. The stretch from Long Hollow to Greer Spring was slow but not low. We were able to get through each riffle without getting out although there was some dragging. Past Greer Spring, the water was swifter with less dragging. We originally planned to start at MO 19 but decided we wanted to see the confluence of the spring and the river. Because of that, our late start, and the long shuttle, we had more river miles to cover on the first day than we had planned. We were also in competition with other groups for the sparse camp sites. RB SMB Bartlett, Stephanie Edmond, Brian Van Someren, Tom We had more rain this morning but it wasn't the deluge we'd had before. We didn't get an early start since we only had a few miles to go. This day was marked by two significant snake sightings. The first was a erythristic common watersnake, which was neat enough. When I posted this on Facebook later, someone else posted the same colored snake from a different observer. It turns out it was the exact same snake, verified because it was basking on the exact same log. Less than a mile away, Stephanie and I were looking at some flowering shrubs halfway up a bluff. We paddled over to get a better look, not paying attention to the rocks below. Without realizing it, I had paddled Stephanie to within a foot of a basking cottonmouth. Had it been inclined, it could have tagged her hand, which was resting on the side of the canoe. Luckily, it was merely annoyed at our presence. The water flow was fine through this section but the river widened and flattened quite a bit as well. We agreed that the section below Bay Creek just wasn't as scenic and desirable as the upper sections of the river. USGS Gauge Data:Alley Spring (07065495) Discharge: 421 Height: 3.38 Source: Edmond |

RB SMB Bartlett, Stephanie Edmond, Brian Van Someren, Tom The water level was somewhat better. On this stretch and the others, I jumped out several times to save our loaded canoe from certain danger. This is my favorite section of the river. The scenery is fantastic and the river is still small enough to feel like you're enclosed. A few miles before we hit Jam Up Cave, a thunderstorm blew up and rained hard. Tom got a great video of the beginning of this storm. We sought shelter and dried off somewhat in the cave itself. While there, we saw a large group camping on the gravel bar across from the cave. They had several tents and lots of gear. We're calling this the Ron White Expedition. Although there is evidence that Ron White was, in fact, performing this week and not floating and fishing on the Jacks Fork River, we think there was probably a double standing in for him during the shows so the real Ron White could get away. Tom asked if he knew Jeff Foxworthy and he said he did. Who are you going to believe? A published show schedule or a man's self-professed friendship with a famous comedian?

When we reached Lead Mines, the gravel bar where we left the truck was flooded and nearly stranded us until the water receded.
