![]() | 2025-10-13 | MO | Big Piney River | Slabtown | Wyoming Lane | Total trip distance: 7.5 miles7.5 | Good | Excellent | LMB LSF RB SMB Barton, AdamBarton, Scott On the river at 0830 hours and floated about 7.5 miles to Wyoming Lane (USFS) Primitive Access located on river left. We were off the river by 1630 hours (about 1 mile/hour). Even with the limited rainfall over the past couple months, we only had to walk one riffle and had to navigate one logjam in this stretch. The fishing was on and off all day long, with fish beginning to stack together for the fall and winter ahead. Dad and I simultaneously hooked into 17+ inch smallies in the same deep hole, but his jumped at the yak and got away while my fish stuck the landing into the net. Based on our observation, the smallie that dad lost would have pushed 19 inches easily and 3+ pounds. We ended up catching multiple rock bass over nine inches as well and probably caught over 50 rock bass in this stretch, which slightly edged out the smallie total for the day. We likely caught about 8-9 smallies over 15 inches with my 17.25" smallie that weighed 2.5 pounds being the largest. The views of the bluffs and pine trees above the river only added to the wonderful experience. Dad said that he will be back to redeem himself for not cashing in on his trophy smallmouth opportunity. This definitely a river that we have fallen in love with. USGS Gauge Data:Big Piney (06930000)Discharge: 158 Height: 2.46 Source: Barton |

Barton, Scott On the water at 0815 and rolled into Bradleyville at about 1700. We stayed the night at the campground in Brownbranch after floating above the campground the day before, so there was no additional charge for us to access the creek. This section is noticeably wider and shallower in places after the May 2025 flood than it was last year when we floated in June. In many places along this stretch, there are dead trees and debris caked to the sides of the creek channel and in the riparian zones. Also, I lost count of the portages that are currently required to navigate this section due to the strainers and trees that are blocking the main creek channel. In my humble assessment, most of the quality smallmouth and Ozark bass habitat that was once prevalent in this section has been significantly altered or reduced to gravel fill. While a few quality fishing holes can be found on this stretch, I would prefer to float in the stretch above Brownbranch given the current state of the creek. We managed to grind out a solid day of fishing nonetheless, with dad catching our largest smallmouth of the trip (16.5”) and a plethora of 12” + smallmouth to go with it. The gravel mining operation above Bradleyville continues to alter the channel significantly, but our most productive hole of the day was right above the gravel mine. In that one hole, which spans about a 1/4 mile, we caught 10 smallmouth over 13” along with Dad's PB smallie of the trip (16.5"). Finally, the takeout at Bradleyville continues to degrade with each flood, so I am unsure how much longer it will serve as viable access to the creek. Also, the access road at the campground in Brownbranch is on its last leg as well, so I will be curious to see how the access issues on Beaver Creek are resolved after the next major flood event, which seems to happen annually anymore. River was about 730 CFS and the lake was at 870 feet (+3 of normal) so many of the shoals that we fished two weeks prior were gone since the lake had risen five feet in the past week. Nevertheless, we picked up a few decent-sized males and I caught one large "sal" that was 15.5 inches up at the islands. I probably caught over 40 fish in total, but a majority of them were small and not worth the fillet knife. With the lake high, motor boats could get up further into the river, so we had to have our heads on a swivel to get out of the way. We caught a plethora of average-sized males up in the river in small pockets adjacent to the main current on swimmin' minnows. Back towards the lake, we caught a few more white bass, but overall lacked any quality fish the whole day when it came to size. Lake level was about 865ft (2ft low), so that could be hampering the big sals from getting up into the moving water in places. Weather was clear skies, 75 degrees, and light wind (relative for fishing Stockton). Water temperature was about 59 degrees in the afternoon. The cost to put in at Brownbranch is about $10, so budget accordingly. The water level was ideal for fishing and floating. There was a slight stain to the water, which was in part to the creek still coming down from a flood the week prior. A few new trees were down in the water from the recent flood, which made a few technical spots to paddle through. Also, if the water level is any lower than this, there are many riffles that would need to be waded, with slick rocks as a hazard. The final riffle into Bradleyville is a real doozy, so be careful when making that last descent. Most fish were caught using finesse patterns, targeting structure found in the deeper and shaded areas of the creek channel. We caught mostly 10"-12" smallies with a few over 14" and lots of Ozark bass. Overall between Dad and myself, we caught over 100 fish on the day. One of the best fishing floats in Ozarks. Michael caught a 16" smallie that weighed 2lbs 8oz and I caught one that was 15.5" and the same weight. The spawn was later this year due to the cold, wet spring and flooding. Both of our larger smallies appeared to still have some eggs inside and were getting ready to spawn, which is a couple of weeks after their prime spawning period. We finessed fished, using shaky heads and Ned rigs for most of the day. Michael caught a giant green sunfish that was almost ten inches long too! There was a single deep pool that had some American lotus leafing out, so I tied on a whopper plopper and caught a 16" largemouth for my first topwater fish of the year. Later I caught a small spotted bass to complete the bass slam (largemouth, smallmouth, spotted) which I had never done before on Swan Creek. All fish were returned to the water unharmed. Overall, this section was perfect at this water level for paddling, with the Bull Creek gauge between 400-500 CFS. Swan requires an intermediate paddling skillset. The is a huge log jam about 1.5 miles downstream of Moon Valley that created a secondary channel and resulted in a 20 minute detour with a few portages. Swan Creek was the only floatable water within a hundred miles of Springfield. After rainfall brought up mostly all of the streams in the area to flood stage yesterday, the creek was rolling with many haystacks over four feet tall. The section below Garrison and above AA Bridge was brisk but not too bad, but between AA and Hulls Ford was a different animal. Some riffles were a couple hundred yards long and the haystacks just got bigger the further we went. My kayak was swamped twice which caused me to rollout into the current due to being submerged in the middle of a riffle. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND SWAN CREEK TO BEGINNERS when the Bull Creek discharge is over 800 cfs or so. Please be careful between AA Bridge and Hulls Ford Road, as it is for experienced paddlers only. Smallmouth were caught near root wads on small jigs and Ned rigs in the current. Nobody else on the river though on Labor Day weekend was a plus. I caught my personal best smallmouth at just over 15" and Josh caught a 3lb spotted bass near Galena. The high temp for the day was 92 degrees, so we took plenty of time to cool off in the river when the fishing slowed down around noon. Smallmouth bass were hungry and were caught in eddies close to the current. USGS Gauge Data:Boaz (07052250)Discharge: 160 Height: 2.71 Source: Barton |

The forecast called for a 40% chance of thunderstorms and sure enough it opened up on us just past Bay Creek. The fishing was okay before the rain hit, but then disappeared after the storms blew in. Overall a mediocre flow due to the weather, but memories galore due to paddling in the monsoon. USGS Gauge Data:Mountain View (07065200)Discharge: 105 Height: 1.29 Source: Barton |

Not sure if it classifies as "high" but it was moving at a good clip. Most gravel bars were covered and there was one tree down in the creek that had to be portaged around. We put in at the bike trail just downstream from the wastewater treatment plant and floated down through Wilson's Creek National Battlefield. This float is very scenic and gives you the opportunity to see a different side of the park. The takeout at Limey Road is a bit tricky since its at the end of a shoal. ![]() | 2020-05-14 | MO | Bull Creek | Red Bridge Road | Goodnight Hollow | Total trip distance: 9.4 miles9.4 | High | Poor | SMB Barton, AdamKromrey, Mike Simmons, Dillan Wheeler, Seth The river was EXTREMELY fun at this level, but only if your head was on a swivel at all times. We averaged about 3.5 mph for the trip and had many class II rapids to run between Dry Hollow Road and Goodnight Hollow. Would recommend this float with the gauge at 800 cfs or higher due to large boulders and some low-water bridges in play. This section has many trees down as well, so its recommended for experienced paddlers only. Beautiful views though and a shuttle time of 35 minutes due to the aforementioned low-water crossings being impassable.
