![]() | 2025-08-03 | MO | Jacks Fork River | Shawnee Creek (A) | Current River | Total trip distance: 14.4 miles3.2 | Good | Poor | SMB Edmond, AlexEdmond, Brian Edmond, Joseph Camping was mostly peaceful with some minor outdoor activity from a nearby dwelling. Unfortunately, I had an overhead powerline just above my tent and the dwelling had a security light on all night but it was mostly hidden by trees. Otherwise, the site was decent. Alex caught the same Smallmouth Bass and saw some River Otters in the backwater near camp. Breakfast was sausage and egg sandwiches with some chocolate chip muffins. After pulling out around 930 hours, we lazily paddled the distance to the Current River, stopping at a few places along the way. Many gravel bars (including our own) was covered in horse tracks and droppings from trail riders in the area. We saw at least four groups while out, including two who passed through our campsite (luckily while we were packing up). Although we heard and read that the river slows considerably below Eminence, we didn't find this to be really noticeable. Even with a reduced summer water flow, the current was steady and present except for just a handful of slower pools. USGS Gauge Data:Eminence (07066000)Discharge: 268 Height: 2.53 Source: Edmond |
![]() | 2025-08-03 | MO | Current River | Jacks Fork River | Old Ferry Access | Total trip distance: 14.4 miles0.8 | Good | Poor | None Edmond, AlexEdmond, Brian Edmond, Joseph We floated the short distance from the Jacks Fork to this takeout. I paid Harvey's $65 to shuttle our rig here, a good deal and much better than taking two vehicles. We got off the river at 1300 hours. The boat ramp was really slick and Joseph went down hard while loading the boats. He has an injured leg that we hope will heal quickly. I'm glad we were able to get out for the weekend. I'd only consider doing this stretch again during the week or off-season to avoid the people, horses, and less than ideal camping situation. ![]() | 2025-08-02 | MO | Jacks Fork River | Alley Spring | Shawnee Creek (A) | Total trip distance: 14.4 miles10.4 | Good | Poor | SMB Edmond, AlexEdmond, Brian Edmond, Joseph We wanted to get out for the weekend on a section of the Jacks Fork we'd never paddled before. We started at Alley Spring which was a mistake. The river between the spring and Eminence (and a bit beyond) was completely packed with tubers and boaters, mostly drinking and playing loud music. Some sections were impossible to navigate because the number of boats packed narrow runs to the point where we literally could not squeeze a boat between them. We made the best of it, passing crowds of people in a futile effort to get ahead of the pack. After the last public gravel bar in Eminence, we had the river completely to ourselves, save for one motor boat with a guy and his kid fishing. Despite the lack of people, friendly, isolated gravel bars were difficult to find due to private land ownership and a county road that followed the north banks of the river for its entire length below Eminence--a neat feature if you're traveling the area by a wheeled vehicle! We wanted to get downstream enough that we didn't have to be out most of the next day and get back late at night. Thus, we paddled all the way to the National Park boundary only to find some private inholdings prevented us from finding that elusive perfect gravel bar for a campsite. We settled for one just 1/2 mile upstream from Shawnee Creek NPS campground. It was fine and we made the best of it. Dinner was cheeseburgers, macaroni and cheese, honey glazed carrots, and s'mores for dessert. We started at Alley Spring at 1300 hours and pulled into our campsite at 1800 hours, paddling nearly all the way with only very brief stops. Alex caught one decent-sized Smallmouth Bass in a little backwater near our campsite. USGS Gauge Data:Eminence (07066000)Discharge: 272 Height: 2.54 Source: Edmond |

It was exciting and would have been difficult, perhaps even dangerous, to do without an experienced guide. Emily and Daniel did an amazing job. Emily was training Daniel (her son) and knew every riffle and rock in the channel and knew exactly where to send us. We paddled on their command, leaned in, locked in, and rested during still waters. This was a fantastic trip that we all enjoyed. We got on the river about 1100 hours and were finished by about 1215 hours. ![]() | 2023-08-07 | MO | Current River | Mill Hollow (A) | Round Spring | Total trip distance: 18.3 miles5.3 | Good | None | None Edmond, AlexEdmond, Brian Edmond, Joseph Edmond, Julian At least one raccoon (and I heard it fighting with something, probably another raccoon) found its way to our campsite last night. I got up and caught it red-handed trying to get into the stove (the only thing I couldn't lock away). I moved the stove to the canoe, thinking it would be more secure there. I then heard it rattling around in the canoe and was up half the night worried that it would knock the boat off the sandbar and we'd have no way to get all of us and our gear downriver. That didn't happen, of course. The next morning, I woke up early and spent quite a bit of time just sitting by the river while the boys slept in. Breakfast was sausage / egg / cheese muffins, toast and homemade jelly, and fruit. We pushed off right at 1000 hours and pulled out around 1300 hours. ![]() | 2023-08-06 | MO | Current River | Akers | Mill Hollow (A) | Total trip distance: 18.3 miles13.0 | Good | None | None Edmond, AlexEdmond, Brian Edmond, Joseph Edmond, Julian We left the house at 730 hours with a threat of rain but none materialized. I was worried about how the car would perform with a loaded trailer and four people. It seemed to do okay but hard telling what kind of wear and tear I put on it. At one point, halfway there, the car stopped responding to the gas pedal. I thought it was done because of the load. Turns out Joseph had fallen asleep and his knee pushed the shift into neutral. I fixed that and we were on our way again. We paid Jadwin ($95) to shuttle the car and trailer and managed to be on the river right at 1100 hours. At first, we were pretty casual but once we saw how many people were on the river, we realized we needed to get ahead of them to properly enjoy Cave Spring. We got in front of most people and were able to check it out. We stopped at Pulltite to get chips and water for Julian. After that, we stopped at the spring and then pushed on towards our campsite, which was the little sandbar near Mill Hollow that we stayed at last year. We arrived at 1730 hours, setup, and made a dinner of grilled burgers, mac and cheese, and honey glazed carrots, with peanut butter with chocolate chunk cookies for dessert. It would be really difficult to do this stretch successfully without a lot of paddling (which we did) or arriving near dark. ![]() | 2022-09-05 | MO | Beaver Creek | Hoot Owl Hollow (A) | Long Creek Road | Total trip distance: 11.4 miles3.7 | Good | None | None Edmond, AlexEdmond, Brian Edmond, Joseph Edmond, Julian We packed up camp and left the gravel bar shortly before 1000 hours after a breakfast of sausage / egg / cheese English muffin sandwiches and chocolate chip muffins. We were running low on water so I thawed the frozen water bottles I had in the cooler. It worked fine since we had eaten most of the food that needed refrigeration and the freezer packs were holding out. The river water had cleared considerably but was still flowing well. Because the river ended up in several braided channels, we did have some difficulty with dragging at riffles in a few places. There were also some dangerous areas, including a riffle that would have been impossible to navigate successfully in even a kayak. We avoided these and nobody tipped over although I scraped past a root wad and ended up with a minor contusion on the top of my head and lost my paddle in the process. Luckily, Alex retrieved it for me. We stopped in a few places to get out and explore and swim. We were at the takeout by 1300 hours. Since everyone had to fit in the car, we packed the gear in an upright canoe and repacked at the put-in to have a good trip home. We arrived at home by 1700 hours after a stop at Andy's on South Campbell. USGS Gauge Data:Bradleyville (07054080)Discharge: 169 Height: 3.43 Source: Edmond |

Water levels looked good for Beaver Creek and it was close so we decided to give it a try (the Northfork, our original destination, was flooding with the recent rain events). I was surprised to see the water murky, almost muddy. The shuttle to Long Creek Road was more than an hour as it was not direct. We stopped for an extended period at Brushy Creek which was a cool, clear stream that mixed with the muddy waters of Beaver Creek. We ate lunch and made our way to the camp site just above Hoot Owl Hollow. Dinner was burgers, mac and cheese, broccoli / sugar snap peas / mushrooms, and s'mores for dessert. Although the night was clear and fairly warm, we were tired and didn't stay up late. The water level on this day was not that high despite the murkiness of the water. It didn't warrant a "High" rating although it was really running down at Long Creek. I think we managed to get on the river as it was dropping rapidly (see the difference in water level between the two days). Alex and I ran the shuttle, Joseph and Julian stayed behind. We cooked burgers, ate pasta salad, chips, and cookies, and swam and skipped rocks for much of the afternoon. Around 1400 hours, we pushed off to finish the journey but stopped a few times to swim and relax. The water level was a little low in spots but still warrants a "Good" rating. Several others were on the river due to the hot weather. Maybe 1/3 to a 1/4 of this stretch had to be hiked upstream with our kayaks in tow. It wasn't too bad but more than some expected. Once we got to the gravel bar, the day was excellent. Unfortunately, the swimming hole at this bend is starting to fill in with gravel. It's like to be full in a year or two or maybe after the next big flood. Elseya was in my kayak for most of the trip. Hannah turned out to be very good and independent in a kayak. Julian, of course, was an old pro. Past Greer Spring, the water was swifter with less dragging. We originally planned to start at MO 19 but decided we wanted to see the confluence of the spring and the river. Because of that, our late start, and the long shuttle, we had more river miles to cover on the first day than we had planned. We were also in competition with other groups for the sparse camp sites.
