After breaking camp, we slowly started downstream around 1000 hours. We were pestered by motor boats today (as we were yesterday). Tom and I saw a family of at least three otters about halfway through this stretch. After a few stops to swim and play, we pulled out around 1500 hours. After breaking camp, we slowly started downstream around 1000 hours. We were pestered by motor boats today (as we were yesterday). We started downstream around 1130 hours. The stretch from Long Hollow to Greer Spring was slow but not low. We were able to get through each riffle without getting out although there was some dragging. Past Greer Spring, the water was swifter with less dragging. We originally planned to start at MO 19 but decided we wanted to see the confluence of the spring and the river. Because of that, our late start, and the long shuttle, we had more river miles to cover on the first day than we had planned. We were also in competition with other groups for the sparse camp sites. We finally found one around 1800 hours that was small but suited us fairly well.We started downstream around 1130 hours. The stretch from Long Hollow to Greer Spring was slow but not low. The water was high and murky. There were no dangerous obstacles on this stretch but some places were appropriately tricky for any wild river. The wind was troublesome. At times, the south or southwest wind was blowing directly into our faces despite our northward trajectory. This resulted in lost time and an unusual amount of corrective paddling which wore us out for such a long trip, despite the fast current. The water was high and murky.
