We didn't bump or scrape very much but the current was sluggish. There were several other groups on the river, some loud and obnoxious, but it wasn't the regular weekend crowd, for sure. We saw two tattooed ladies in tiny bikinis showing off their athletic skills and several groups of rafters with loud music and disorderly conduct. We stopped around 1200 hours to cook some burgers and eat a leisurely lunch. Joseph rolled his kayak and lost a shoe in the process. Curiously, we were never able to locate it despite poking around the tree rootwads and watching for a floating shoe further downstream. We were on the river by 1000 hours and off by 1630 hours. The temperature stayed in the mid-80s and it was cloudy for much of the day keeping the conditions very pleasant. We did run into a headwind towards the end of the trip. We were on the water about 0830 and originally planned to camp near Pine Bluff and finish at Ross the next day. However, due to heat, slow fishing, and the river moving at a pretty good clip. We decided around 1700 to paddle the final 4-5 miles to Ross and cut the trip short. We made it to Ross about 1915 and were exhausted. Overall the river was great for paddling, but not for fishing. I was surprise by how dingy the water was, but we are inexperienced on the Big Piney in the summertime, so it may just be par for the course. The weather was nearly perfect with warm weather and probably a 50% cloud cover for most of the day, keeping the hot sunshine from building up too much. We encountered a few minor headwinds but they didn't last long. We missed the "good" water by a day but this was still a good water level rating with several exciting riffles and no slow pools. Along the way, we saw four large congregations of Longnose Gar, presumably spawning, with each group containing well over a hundred individuals. These were mostly in swift water but not in the actual riffles. Several of the individuals were in very close proximity with each other. Lunch was rivercado, crackers, deer summer sausage, cheese, chips, dip, grapes, and cookies. No other boats were on the river. A few people were at the various access points along the way. The water was cold and clear and only a few turtles were seen, including a dead softshell. We got on the river right at 1100 hours and were packed up and headed home about 1700 hours. Bull Creek gauge was 310 cfs.This was a great day to be out. Tough fishing conditions were in store for us with post-frontal conditions (clear sky, morning temps in the 30s, high barometric pressure, and variable winds.) The water level was lower than normal (USGS daily CFS mean) for this time of year according to the USGS gauge, which is downstream from where Greer Spring dumps into the river. In general, floating above Greer Crossing is tough due to no USGS gauge being present on this stretch of the river, which increases the local awareness needed to float the river at the right time and right water level. Because of our lack of knowledge about the Eleven Point as this was my first time floating this section, we had to regularly portage due to low water levels and numerous riffles with strainers in the channel that we didn’t feel like challenging since the high for the day was only 57 degrees. Nevertheless, we scrapped out a pretty decent day of smallmouth and Ozark bass fishing by our standards. I managed to catch my new PB smallie at 18" and caught at least a half dozen or more above 14" in totality. All in all, we caught about 40 smallmouth on the day. Many if not all the fish caught had pretty good bellies on them, so the pre-spawn is beginning to crank up as the photo period continues to lengthen day by day in the spring. This stretch of the Eleven Point is beautiful and would be an absolute blast with a little more water (ideally 600+ CFS on the gauge at Bardley) to speed up some of the slower holes and deepen the riffles by a few inches, making one of the most “remote-feeling” streams of the Ozarks a true gem to experience.On the water about 0945 and made it to Greer Crossing about 1730. The day was mostly sunny with some early morning clouds that kept the temperature chilly. It warmed up a bit later in the afternoon and the wind was minimal.
