We were off the river by 1630 hours (about 1 mile/hour). Even with the limited rainfall over the past couple months, we only had to walk one riffle and had to navigate one logjam in this stretch. The fishing was on and off all day long, with fish beginning to stack together for the fall and winter ahead. Dad and I simultaneously hooked into 17+ inch smallies in the same deep hole, but his jumped at the yak and got away while my fish stuck the landing into the net. Based on our observation, the smallie that dad lost would have pushed 19 inches easily and 3+ pounds. We ended up catching multiple rock bass over nine inches as well and probably caught over 50 rock bass in this stretch, which slightly edged out the smallie total for the day. We likely caught about 8-9 smallies over 15 inches with my 17.25" smallie that weighed 2.5 pounds being the largest. The views of the bluffs and pine trees above the river only added to the wonderful experience. Dad said that he will be back to redeem himself for not cashing in on his trophy smallmouth opportunity. This definitely a river that we have fallen in love with. USGS Gauge Data:Big Piney (06930000)Discharge: 158 Height: 2.46 Source: Barton |

Very few people were out today. We saw three other groups the entire time we were out and pretty much had the entire length of the river to ourselves. The water here was about as low and slow as we've ever experienced on this stretch but we had the whole day and spent a lot of time just lounging. Lunch was fresh fruit, cucumbers, rivercado, deer sausage, cheddar cheese, chips, and crackers. The day was partly sunny and the temperature was high enough that we sought shade at times. The clouds were perfectly puffy and white and we even got a few sprinkles towards the end of the day. Fossiliferous was the word of the day. We found the river much more crowded than anticipated. The canoe rental places were really busy and at least a few large groups were starting when we arrived. Two rafts contained some cute girls celebrating someone's 40th birthday party. This part of the state is in a drought. The spring kept the river navigable but there were several places where we bumped or dragged. Although we never had to get out of our boats because of careful navigation, some others didn't choose wisely and ended up in shallow water. Lunch was deer sausage, cheese, crackers, rivercado, cucumbers, grapes, and coconut cookies. Originally, Julian was going to go with us but he was too tired from his homecoming dance the night before. Unfortunately, I had an overhead powerline just above my tent and the dwelling had a security light on all night but it was mostly hidden by trees. Otherwise, the site was decent. Alex caught the same Smallmouth Bass and saw some River Otters in the backwater near camp. Breakfast was sausage and egg sandwiches with some chocolate chip muffins. After pulling out around 930 hours, we lazily paddled the distance to the Current River, stopping at a few places along the way. Many gravel bars (including our own) was covered in horse tracks and droppings from trail riders in the area. We saw at least four groups while out, including two who passed through our campsite (luckily while we were packing up). Although we heard and read that the river slows considerably below Eminence, we didn't find this to be really noticeable. ![]() | 2025-08-02 | MO | Jacks Fork River | Alley Spring | Shawnee Creek (A) | Total trip distance: 14.4 miles10.4 | Good | Poor | SMB Edmond, AlexEdmond, Brian Edmond, Joseph We wanted to get out for the weekend on a section of the Jacks Fork we'd never paddled before. We started at Alley Spring which was a mistake. The river between the spring and Eminence (and a bit beyond) was completely packed with tubers and boaters, mostly drinking and playing loud music. Some sections were impossible to navigate because the number of boats packed narrow runs to the point where we literally could not squeeze a boat between them. We made the best of it, passing crowds of people in a futile effort to get ahead of the pack. After the last public gravel bar in Eminence, we had the river completely to ourselves, save for one motor boat with a guy and his kid fishing. Despite the lack of people, friendly, isolated gravel bars were difficult to find due to private land ownership and a county road that followed the north banks of the river for its entire length below Eminence--a neat feature if you're traveling the area by a wheeled vehicle! We wanted to get downstream enough that we didn't have to be out most of the next day and get back late at night. Thus, we paddled all the way to the National Park boundary only to find some private inholdings prevented us from finding that elusive perfect gravel bar for a campsite. We settled for one just 1/2 mile upstream from Shawnee Creek NPS campground. It was fine and we made the best of it. Dinner was cheeseburgers, macaroni and cheese, honey glazed carrots, and s'mores for dessert. We started at Alley Spring at 1300 hours and pulled into our campsite at 1800 hours, paddling nearly all the way with only very brief stops. Alex caught one decent-sized Smallmouth Bass in a little backwater near our campsite. USGS Gauge Data:Eminence (07066000)Discharge: 272 Height: 2.54 Source: Edmond |

We spent a very leisurely day paddling this short and slow run. The water level was good with no portage necessary unless you weren't paying attention to the channel. Lunch was a potluck of lots of snacks. We stopped to swim at least four times. The water temperature was perfect for a refreshing but not cold swim and we spent a lot of time just sitting in the water. Their canoes are Osagian aluminum canoes and, despite what their website says, they don't have kayaks available, they have 12' Osagian aluminum pack canoes. The shuttle to the put in was two miles in the bed of a farm truck. It was unconventional but it works.
One person fished, no fish were caught. I didn't expect much, not the best time of year for fishing, and it was very hot.
About 0.4 miles into the float, the river split around a large island. The right side is deeper and easier. If water levels permit, I recommend the left side, as it's the prettiest section of the river. On our trip, right at the fork we had to get out and drag over some riffles, but outside of that, it was fine. I'd still recommend this route with lower water, the cliffs are worth some light portaging.
For the first section, there will be bluffs on the left. Once you start seeing steeper terrain / bluffs on the right side, you have about three miles left. The last two miles are wider and slower so you'll definitely have to paddle this section. You may start to see power boats in this section. We encountered two power boats.
Crowds were practically nonexistent. We encountered maybe ten other paddlers total. Keep in mind, this was on a Sunday with a heat index of 105oF.
This section of the river is relatively undeveloped. There was only one house visible from the river. There were a couple times we were close enough to houses that we could hear lawn mowers, but couldn't see them.
Trashwise, it wasn't terrible, but not pristine. We saw a few tires, and some general trash and debris that had been caught up in prior floods.
At one point, you come within 200 feet of Devil's Back Floats. You may even hear cars or people at the campground but you're still over two miles from the access. It's a very meandering river!
Overall, the float was enjoyable. The Meramec is not far away, and a better float all around, but if you live near by, this is a fine way to spend a day. Just be ready to paddle. USGS Gauge Data:Union (07016500)Discharge: 193 Height: 3.27 Source: Scholten |

Barton, Scott On the water at 0815 and rolled into Bradleyville at about 1700. We stayed the night at the campground in Brownbranch after floating above the campground the day before, so there was no additional charge for us to access the creek. This section is noticeably wider and shallower in places after the May 2025 flood than it was last year when we floated in June. In many places along this stretch, there are dead trees and debris caked to the sides of the creek channel and in the riparian zones. Also, I lost count of the portages that are currently required to navigate this section due to the strainers and trees that are blocking the main creek channel. In my humble assessment, most of the quality smallmouth and Ozark bass habitat that was once prevalent in this section has been significantly altered or reduced to gravel fill. While a few quality fishing holes can be found on this stretch, I would prefer to float in the stretch above Brownbranch given the current state of the creek. We managed to grind out a solid day of fishing nonetheless, with dad catching our largest smallmouth of the trip (16.5”) and a plethora of 12” + smallmouth to go with it. The gravel mining operation above Bradleyville continues to alter the channel significantly, but our most productive hole of the day was right above the gravel mine. In that one hole, which spans about a 1/4 mile, we caught 10 smallmouth over 13” along with Dad's PB smallie of the trip (16.5"). Finally, the takeout at Bradleyville continues to degrade with each flood, so I am unsure how much longer it will serve as viable access to the creek. Also, the access road at the campground in Brownbranch is on its last leg as well, so I will be curious to see how the access issues on Beaver Creek are resolved after the next major flood event, which seems to happen annually anymore. We had originally planned to do this trip Wed through Fri but the rain and high water levels helped us postpone to the weekend. The shuttle to Bay Creek was a little over an hour long. We started paddling downstream around 1115 hours but immediately (within sight of the access point) swamped the canoe and had to collect all of our gear. The riffle was relatively slow but tricky for a loaded canoe so I jumped out to help guide it through and it got caught between a rock and a tree trunk and just wouldn't let go. It rolled, filled with water, and very nearly got bent in half. We lost only a small tackle box thanks to Tom and Julian gathering everything while I freed the boat. We caught a plethora of average-sized males up in the river in small pockets adjacent to the main current on swimmin' minnows. Back towards the lake, we caught a few more white bass, but overall lacked any quality fish the whole day when it came to size. Lake level was about 865ft (2ft low), so that could be hampering the big sals from getting up into the moving water in places. Weather was clear skies, 75 degrees, and light wind (relative for fishing Stockton). Water temperature was about 59 degrees in the afternoon. Hopefully, some good spring rains come in the next week or so to get one last push of fish into the river to target. USGS Gauge Data:Dadeville (06918440)Discharge: 444 Height: 6.79 Source: Barton |
