2016-10-23 | MO | Osage Fork H | Hull Ford | Gasconade River | 4.5 | Hazelgreen | 1100 | 3.18 | Good | Poor | None | Amburn, Andrea; Amburn, Matt; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Van Someren, Tom | The river was fairly high and murky due to the massive rainfall event over this area last week (Wed night into Thu). I expected the water would have receded back to normal and perhaps even be too low to float due to the small watershed. | Edmond
2016-10-23 | MO | Gasconade River | Osage Fork | Hazelgreen | 0.8 | Hazelgreen | 1100 | 3.18 | High | Poor | None | Amburn, Andrea; Amburn, Matt; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Van Someren, Tom | The river was flowing and the water was murky. There were no obstacles in this short distance and canoe travel was fine. The level was high due to the massive rainfall event over the area last week (Wed night and Thu). I believe a long float just on the Gasconade could have been attempted at this level. | Edmond
2016-10-16 | MO | Big Sugar Creek | Cyclone B | Deep Ford | 5.0 | Powell | 62 | 4.99 | Good | Fair | LMB, LSF, RB, SMB | Van Someren, Tom | The water level rating should actually be right between low and good. There was still enough water to navigate, but I had to push through several low water gravel bar-ish areas. Got bit by a spider on my right side under my arm. | Van Someren
2016-10-15 | MO | Big Sugar Creek | Powell | Cyclone B | 9.6 | Powell | 77 | 5.10 | Good | Fair | LMB, LSF, RB, SMB | Van Someren, Tom | The water level rating should actually be right between low and good. There was still enough water to navigate, but I had to push through several low water gravel bar-ish areas. Got bit by a spider on my right side under my arm. | Van Someren
2016-10-09 | MO | James River | Rivercut | Delaware Town | 7.5 | Boaz | 96 | 2.46 | Low | Fair | CCF, LSF, SMB | Van Someren, Tom | The water discharge was navigable, but not enjoyable. I think I scraped more surface off the bottom of my kayak on this trip alone than all other trips combined. | Van Someren
2016-10-02 | MO | James River | Hootentown | McCall Bridge Road | 6.4 | Boaz | 113 | 2.38 | Good | Good | LSF, RB, SMB | Dudenhoeffer, Todd; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Van Someren, Tom; Williams, Sarah | This was near the low end of what would be considered a good float. A few of the riffles were too low and some places ended up being traps for the boats because of the low water. | Edmond
2016-09-24 | MO | Shoal Creek | Cherry Corner | Cherry Corner | 4.0 | Joplin | 160 | 2.00 | Good | Fair | BLG, LMB, RB | Van Someren, Tom | Water was murky, reminiscent of the DOJ. But the gradient through this section made paddling upstream seem more difficult than other typical Ozark streams. Paddled up to the railroad trestle and floated back. | Van Someren
2016-09-18 | MO | Finley River | Reed Road | Reed Road | 4.2 | Riverdale | 99 | 1.24 | Low | Fair | BLG, RB, SMB | Van Someren, Tom | Put in and took out at Reed Road. Paddled upstream for 2+ miles until a YUUUUUUGE tree snarl was encountered (coordinates of the blockage: 37.042665, -93.072104). | Van Someren
2016-09-05 | MO | Big Piney River | Six Crossings B | Ross Bridge | 3.2 | Big Piney | 187 | 2.81 | Good | None | None | Van Someren, Tom | This section had way too many long, slow, lake-ish pools with virtually no current. | Van Someren
2016-09-04 | MO | Big Piney River | Hazelton Spring A | Six Crossings B | 14.9 | Big Piney | 192 | 2.83 | Good | Fair | RB, SMB | Van Someren, Tom | Camped out Sunday on a small sand bar at mile 51 (37.643281, -92.060840). | Van Someren
2016-09-03 | MO | Big Piney River | Boiling Springs | Mason Bridge | 6.0 | Big Piney | 197 | 2.85 | Good | Poor | RB | Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Ligon, Adalia; Ligon, Day; Ligon, Elseya; Van Someren, Tom; Williamson, Amelia; Williamson, Charlie | The water level was good through most areas. There were a few tricky sections, including one where we pulled the canoes through manually. There were several very long, still pools in this section (and further downstream as well). | Edmond
2016-09-03 | MO | Big Piney River | Mason Bridge | Hazelton Spring A | 4.3 | Big Piney | 197 | 2.85 | Good | None | None | Van Someren, Tom | Camped out Saturday night just above Hazelton Spring (mile 36.1). | Van Someren
2016-08-27 | MO | Northfork River | Hale | Twin Bridges | 9.3 | Tecumseh | 538 | 2.76 | Good | Good | LSF, SMB | Dudenhoeffer, Todd; Edmond, Brian; Larsen, Chris; Larsen, Lisa; Moler, Leta; Travers, Gina; Van Someren, Cynthia; Van Someren, Tom | This was a good float but the water was almost too low to be considered good. Another 4" to 6" of water would have been much better if not ideal. There were several long, still pools on this stretch. Very few other floaters were encountered. | Edmond
2016-08-13 | MO | Finley River | Lindenlure | Ozark | 6.2 | Riverdale | 191 | 1.58 | Good | Great | GSF, LSF, SMB | Coroleuski, Linda; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Van Someren, Tom; Williams, Sarah | The water level was very good, but this trip included at least two non-trivial portages and several very tricky spots, even for a kayak, due to downed trees and overhanging branches. | Edmond
2016-08-07 | MO | Finley River | Riverside | Finley River Park | 1.4 | Riverdale | 185 | 1.56 | Good | Fair | LSF, SMB | Van Someren, Tom | Just paddled upstream from the Finley River park to Riverside bridge and back to fish a little, so twice the distance. | Van Someren
2016-07-16 | MO | Beaver Creek | Brownbranch | Bradleyville | 7.9 | Bradleyville | 241 | 3.15 | Good | Excellent | LSF, GSF, LMB, SMB, RB | Amburn, Andrea; Amburn, Matt; Dudenhoeffer, Todd; Edmond, Brian; Eth, Joe; Van Someren, Tom | This was an excellent float trip. The water was nearly perfect (a little bit higher would have been nice but it was fantastic just like this). Joe caught more than 50 fish. I caught nearly 30 or more. Even when we didn't catch anything, we could feel fish hitting the lure. | Edmond
2016-07-01 | OK | Blue River | US 377 | Coatsworth Road | 5.7 | Connerville | 204 | 6.04 | Good | Excellent | SMB, LMB, KSB, GSF | Edmond, Brian; Fillmore, Becky; Fillmore, Brian; Hallmark, Larissa; Ligon, Day; Ligon, Guerdon; Sardina, Krissy; Thompson, Denise; Van Someren, Tom | This stretch had several challenging rapids. The flow was pretty good but several times, we got stuck on the bedrock and had to scoot through or pull the boats out. Fishing was obviously great, but more water would have made this a more exciting kayaking adventure. | Edmond
2016-05-28 | MO | Flat Creek | Jenkins | Rt EE | 11.8 | Jenkins | 135 | 4.80 | Good | Poor | None | Amburn, Andrea; Casey, Libra; Van Someren, Cynthia; Van Someren, Tom; Whisenant, Brenda; Whisenant, Don | The current was slow and the trip took the entire day (8+ hours). Had to portage around downed trees once and scraped and dragged through gravel in several places. | Van Someren
2016-04-24 | MO | James River | Delaware Town | Shelvin Rock | 6.5 | Boaz | 214 | 2.77 | Good | Poor | None | Amburn, Andrea; Amburn, Matt; Casey, Libra; Coroleuski, Abby; Coroleuski, Ethan; Coroleuski, Lauren; Coroleuski, Linda; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Eth, Joe; Liu, Aimeng; McKay, Lane; Turk Scott; Van Someren, Cynthia; Van Someren, Tom; Vaught, Carol; Williams, Sarah; Wilson, Ryan | Although I got out only a few times because of shallow water, we rubbed the bottom quite a bit and got hung up on rocks a few times. I wouldn't want to do this much lower. | Edmond
2016-03-15 | AR | Buffalo River E | Ponca | Kyles | 10.6 | Ponca | 449 | 3.31 | Good | None | None | Amburn, Andrea; Arnold, Al; Edmond, Brian; Eth, Joe; Van Someren, Tom | The water level was nearly perfect for this trip. There were a few places where kayaks dragged the gravel or some rocks but the current was swift nearly the entire time and most riffles were easily navigated. | Edmond
2016-02-28 | MO | James River | Kerr | Cox | 4.8 | Galena | 369 | 4.48 | Good | Poor | None | Amburn, Andrea; Amburn, Matt; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Ficarra, Serena; Turk, Scott; Van Someren, Tom | It was very windy and cloudy for nearly the entire time, making for an unpleasant float. Nobody fished very much, including Julian. | Edmond
2016-02-19 | MO | Niangua River C | Bennett Spring | Barclay | 6.3 | Windyville | 97 | 1.86 | Good | Poor | RB | Arnold, Al; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Van Someren, Tom | The winds were high this day, making paddling difficult in places. Although the spring keeps this river floatable, the water level was noticeably low in several places. | Edmond
2015-12-05 | MO | Bull Creek D | Goodnight Hollow | Walnut Shade | 7.2 | Walnut Shade | 248 | 4.17 | Good | None | None | Arnold, Al; Eth, Joe; Flat Brian; Turk, Scott; Van Someren, Tom; Williams, Sarah | Tom: I'd rate Saturday's float just below "Good". The water level condition wasn't "ideal", as we still hit bottom many times going through riffles, but didn't have to get out and pull over gravel bars (unless you REALLY effed up and chose your path poorly). Al: I'd say it was "Good". There were maybe four or five riffles I got stuck on, but I probably could have avoided at least a couple of them! | Van Someren
2015-11-25 | MO | Flat Creek | Rt EE | Flat Creek Road | 5.5 | Jenkins | 181 | 4.21 | Good | None | None | Eth, Joe; Turk, Scott; Van Someren, Tom | Van Someren
2015-08-29 | MO | Crane Creek I | Swinging Bridge | Otto Road | 6.0 | Jenkins | 162 | 4.11 | Good | None | None | Coroleuski, Linda; Edmond, Brian; Eth, Joe; Van Someren, Tom; Wilson, Ryan | The water level was at the very cusp of being too low to float. This stretch was very technical, with several downed trees, narrow water, and difficult places to maneuver, even with a kayak. It is not recommended for a canoe or for inexperienced paddlers without the expectation of a lot of portages and upsets. The locals here mentioned Spring Creek (a tributary of Crane Creek) as being a good float with high water. | Edmond
2015-08-16 | MO | James River | Tailwaters | Rivercut | 7.1 | Springfield | 158 | 5.07 | Good | None | None | Amburn, Andrea; Amburn, Matt; Coroleuski, Linda; Edmond, Brian; Van Someren, Cynthia; Van Someren, Tom; Williamson, Myki | The water level was fine for this trip, but we counted perhaps 6-8 obstacles that were technically challenging in a canoe or for an inexperienced kayaker. In several places, we had to help others or exit the boat to portage around or through particularly troublesome obstacles. | Edmond
2015-08-09 | MO | Flat Creek | Rt EE | Flat Creek Road | 5.5 | Jenkins | 154 | 4.06 | Good | Good | LMB, LSF, RB, SMB | Bramow, Maxi; Casey, Libra; Dickens, Kristen; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Eth, Joe; Lowery, Marc; Moler, Leta; Van Someren, Tom | Almost everyone was able to get through all the riffles without getting out of their boats, but several places were too shallow to float without dragging at least some. A lot of debris was in the river from recent floods. This is definitely at the low end of what could be considered a comfortable floating level. | Edmond
2015-05-25 | MO | Flat Creek | Jenkins | Rt EE | 11.8 | Jenkins | 1450 | 7.29 | High | None | None | Edmond, Brian; Eth, Joe; Van Someren, Tom | The river was high with a couple of downed trees that were problematic. | Edmond
2015-03-21 | MO | James River | Shelvin Rock | Hootentown | 6.2 | Boaz | 651 | 3.74 | Good | Poor | None | Casey, Libra; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Eth, Joe; Green, Dana; Green, Eric; Ligon, Adalia; Ligon, Day; Ligon, Elseya; McKnight, Don; McKnight, Jen; Van Someren, Tom | The river level was nearly perfect with no major obstacles. The rapids just above the Finley were substantial. | Edmond
2014-06-22 | MO | James River | Hootentown | McCall Bridge Road | 6.4 | Boaz | 275 | 2.88 | Good | Fair | GSF | Amburn, Andrea; Edmond, Brian; Hunt, Rob; Van Someren, Cynthia; Van Someren, Tom | Edmond
2013-08-17 | MO | Finley River | Riverdale | James River | 6.4 | Riverdale | 244 | 1.76 | Good | None | None | Bowe, Michelle; Edmond, Alex; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Joseph; Edmond, Julian; Ligon, Adalia; Ligon, Day; Ligon, Elicia; Ligon, Elseya; Van Someren, Cynthia; Van Someren, Tom; Williams, Hannah; Williams, Sarah; Williams, Tom | The water level was ideal for canoes. There were several obstacles along the way that we walked around for the benefit of the babies. Kayaks were able to traverse most of them with ease. | Edmond
2013-08-17 | MO | James River | Finley River | Hootentown | 3.4 | Boaz | 639 | 3.54 | Good | None | None | Bowe, Michelle; Edmond, Alex; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Joseph; Edmond, Julian; Ligon, Adalia; Ligon, Day; Ligon, Elicia; Ligon, Elseya; Van Someren, Cynthia; Van Someren, Tom | The water was high but not dangerously so. We went over some nice haystacks just below the Finley. Someone reported much higher haystacks above the Finley. | Edmond
2013-06-22 | MO | Jacks Fork River | Buck Hollow | Rymer | 9.4 | Mountain View | 93 | 1.78 | Good | None | None | Bowe, Michelle; Edmond, Brian; Edmond, Julian; Eth, Joe; Turk, Scott; Van Someren, Cynthia; Van Someren, Tom | Camped on Rymer gravel bar the night before. First part of trip was uneventful. Right after Blue Spring, a thunderstorm with lots of lightning and thunder dumped nearly two inches of rain on us. Although this level was considered good, we all agreed that a 3-6" higher water level would have been ideal. | Edmond

C Historical data are mostly lacking for the Niangua River. Furthermore, gauges placed in strategic locations for this purpose are lacking, since Bennett Spring is such an important part of the water source for the river. However, the Niangua can be floated most summers below the spring, even during dry years.
D The Sunday 3 February 2013 edition of the Springfield News-Leader contained a front page article about Bull Creek. It mentioned a local who called the river "white-watery" at 600 cfs and "low and draggy" below 200 cfs (as measured from Walnut Shade).
E The Ponca low water bridge air space measurement, compared to the USGS gauge, is explained by Mike Mills from Buffalo Outdoor Center. He describes 3-4 feet (10-20" air space) as being ideal for the upper Buffalo River as measured at Ponca.
F Salt River trips below the Clarence Cannon Dam Reregulation Pool vary greatly depending on power generation schedules, release of excess flood water, and the reregulation water level itself. Tentative power generation schedules can be found online or by calling 417.881.8772. The corps can be reached directly at 573.735.4097 (Mark Twain Lake) or 314.331.8342 / 800.432.1208 (Saint Louis District). It is best to call in the morning to ensure the tentative schedule will be followed.
G Mississippi River water levels are tracked through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers River Gages site.
H There is no USGS gauge on the Osage Fork of the Gasconade River. The listed water levels are for the Gasconade River near Hazelgreen and might not be a good indicator of the Osage Fork.
I There is no USGS gauge on Crane Creek. The listed water levels are for Flat Creek and might not be a good indicator of Crane Creek, despite the physical proximity of the two streams. The maximum air space for a successful trip at the Otto Road low water bridge is about 13 inches.
