Discharge1880 cfs (median: 722 cfs)High - The river is high and potentially dangerous, especially for the young and / or inexperienced. Normal stream obstacles are sometimes difficult to navigate. Extended distances can be attempted, but canoe travel may not be advisable.High(none)997
Height4.68 feetGood - Conditions are ideal for a canoe or kayak. Boats typically will drag on fewer than one-quarter of riffles, if at all, and portages are unnecessary or rare. Normal float lengths can be attempted without a problem.Good300749
TrendFalling (falling over 24 hours)Low - River is low but can still be floated. Some riffles are okay but most come with significant dragging and might need a portage. Float lengths should be reduced to accommodate low flow, dragging, and portages.Low(none)567
USGSExternal icon USGS Site (External icon Google Maps)Poor - River is too low to float comfortably. Most or all riffles will drag or must be portaged and some obstacles (such as slick shelf rock) cause undue problems. Avoid the river at this stage for casual paddling trips.Poor(none)253

River was high but manageable. Was crowded with a couple bus loads and several groups of multiple kayak fisherman. I hope they had as good a luck as we did. Even though the river was moving we were able to catch fish in spots all day.River was high but manageable. Was crowded with a couple bus loads and several groups of multiple kayak fisherman. Water level was really about perfect. A few snags to watch for, but overall, really a nice trip. We use the Bardley-Greer gauge data to get an estimate of what the Cane Bluff flow is. Great day. Fishing was almost "Great" by the definition above! Fun float with a few technical corners. Some debris from recent flooding - larger trees/limbs below surface, easy to avoid but be aware. Fantastic float and will definitely be doing this again!!!Fishing was almost USGS Gauge Data:

We started downstream around 1130 hours. The stretch from Long Hollow to Greer Spring was slow but not low. We were able to get through each riffle without getting out although there was some dragging. Past Greer Spring, the water was swifter with less dragging. We originally planned to start at MO 19 but decided we wanted to see the confluence of the spring and the river. Because of that, our late start, and the long shuttle, we had more river miles to cover on the first day than we had planned. We were also in competition with other groups for the sparse camp sites. We finally found one around 1800 hours that was small but suited us fairly well.We started downstream around 1130 hours. The stretch from Long Hollow to Greer Spring was slow but not low. After breaking camp, we slowly started downstream around 1000 hours. We were pestered by motor boats today (as we were yesterday). Tom and I saw a family of at least three otters about halfway through this stretch. This was an excellent and casual float. The section above Greer Spring was a little low and we dragged or bumped through most of the riffles (a few had enough to carry us without bumping the bottom). After the spring, the river was swifter and high enough to carry us easily through the remainder of the trip. Nobody else was on the river above MO 19, and only a few people were encountered after that point. We started around 0930 hours and finished at 1640 hours. This was an excellent and casual float.
